Revised Negative Marking – Half Marks Deduction for Wrong Answers
Earlier, SSC used to deduct 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer. Under the new pattern, 0.5 marks will be deducted for every wrong response. However, the overall percentage of penalty remains the same since the marking structure has also been doubled.

Previously, one correct answer fetched 1 mark, and an incorrect one cost 0.25 marks. Now, each correct answer carries 2 marks, while an incorrect one deducts 0.5 marks, maintaining the same ¼ (25%) penalty ratio.
Only 80 Questions in the New Format
In the earlier version of the SSC GD exam, candidates had to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. The new format now includes 80 questions in total. This adjustment has been welcomed by many aspirants as it provides slightly more time to focus on each question.
The paper will consist of four sections:
- General Knowledge and General Awareness
- General Intelligence and Reasoning
- Elementary Mathematics
- Language (English or Hindi)
Each section will now include 20 questions, carrying 40 marks each (2 marks per question), making the total exam worth 160 marks.
Exam Duration Reduced to 60 Minutes
Under the previous system, candidates had 90 minutes to complete 100 questions. In 2025, the test duration has been cut down to 60 minutes for 80 questions, which could increase the time pressure on candidates.
Despite this, the SSC has balanced the change by reducing both the number of questions and exam duration proportionately. With the exam likely to be conducted in February or March 2025, aspirants now have around one and a half months to align their preparation with the updated format.
